Biographical note
Perhaps we can trace some of the impulses that led Juan R. Nördlinger to become an artist in his family genealogy. He remembers Margareth Weinberger – his maternal grandmother, a doctor in Vienna between the wars – for her will and courage in facing the historical crossroads and the resulting migration. She introduced him to the culture of a Buenos Aires full of unique life stories and gave him a special taste for beautiful objects, some of which he still owns today. In an indirect way, a second cousin named Eva, who lived in Israel until her death, testifies with her activity to his early aesthetic parental origins.
JRN highlights Sofía Kunst as the person who triggered the extraordinary providence of vital encounters.
In terms of formative history, JRN recalls that the main prow of his beginningsprow of his beginnings was the Community Outreach Program of the “Ernesto de la Cárcova” Higher School of Fine Arts, one of the most stimulating educational experiences of the Argentine capital during the 1990s. Seduced by a place that is difficult to describe, a surreal mixture of different things, where poetry and madness found their logical neighbourhood, he accepted to learn from artists such as Tulio de Sagastizábal, Carlos Gorriarena, Eduardo Medici, Jorge Pietra, Felipe Pino, Jorge Pirozzi, Marcia Schwartz, Pablo Suárez, Ahuva Szlimowicz and other talented well-known artists; he completed his studies by learning engraving from the hand of Elba Bairon. His ability to recognise human and professional qualities helped him in this first stage of his search.
Orientated in his vocation to painting, it was time to perfect what he already knew: so Nördlinger attended Schwartz’s workshop and worked for several years with Jorge Pirozzi, a great art teacher; he currently monitors results with Juan Doffo. Other collaborations were chosen, including Julia Lublin, Laura Haber and Pedro Roth, who invited him to produce his first artist’s book, which was exhibited at the Eduardo Sívori Museum of Plastic Arts in 1997.
Between workshops, Nördlinger broadened his knowledge of art by attending history courses and seminars on contemporary art. Travelling brought him into direct contact with the latest works of art. After a long period of artistic work, his public presentations began, when his view had become singular enough and he needed to say something to others. He did it in the Metropolitan Museum of Buenos Aires, in December 2011, in an exhibition called “Small Anthology of Pairs”.
Recognising himself as a painter, time and desire allowed him to create his own studio in a neighbourhood close to where he was born. He inaugurated it in 2015, inviting the public to discover a selection of his most recent advances in the gradual task that is his painting, where delay approaches tenacity and pleasure.
